| 2GRANT | Francis "Frankie" | Grant | F | Cpl | 8th Bn Royal Scots |
|
Corporal Francis " Frankie " Grant . Frankie was only 18 when he joined the DLI and a year later he was posted to the 8th Bn Royal Scots , he always described himself as one of the " raggy " lads from Durham City who ended up as a Jock , his best mate from home who he enlisted in the DLI with ended up in the Black Watch and was killed in 1945 ! Frank had fought through North West Europe with C Company 8 RS including the ferocious Battles of Operation Veritable in the Reichswald Forest in Germany in February 1945 fought in the most horrendous winter conditions of the war ( one of the largest but least known Battles in NWE) before being one of the first men to Cross the Rhine north of Bislich , C Company being one of the assault companies. He was then involved in the Elbe river crossing and the Battles in Germany and always considered himself fortunate to have survived. A true hero and the nicest bloke you could meet , i still miss his cups of coffee with honey. - Paul Errington DLI Friends ... click to see full text |
