Notes from Peter Nelson

On discharge from RAF – Many men served, initially, in the DLI regiment but then chose to be seconded from the army and join a new branch of the army, the Royal Flying Corps, which was created principally to assist the artillery in spotting targets and firing more accurately. When the new Military Service, the Royal Air Force, was created, on the 1st April 1918, from that army branch, the RFC men had to choose either to return to their army rank and role or leave the army and become a member of the new Service. Navy personnel who had served with the RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) had a similar choice – go back to being Navy or become RAF.Appointed as a Class F Reservist
